kathy + tim | the slideshow

kathy and tim put their hearts and souls into their wedding. they made it THEIRS. too many people get wrapped up in all the should dos instead of the i do.

their love and laughter was overflowing.

for their "first look," kathy and tim wanted something with personality- kathy coming out of a whale, perhaps? for their last look of the evening, they swung from ropes. we can't ask for more fabulous clients, especially when THEY are the ones to suggest they swing from a rope.

the first father/daughter dance was amazing- not a slow dance (that was their second), but a fast-paced, well choreographed number. later on, the parents surprised k + t with another performance, chorus line style. at least a dozen of their friends and family members rocked out in sparkly gold hats. it was magnificent.

family flew in from around the world to join them on their big day. that's how special they are.

some favorites and a slideshow:

liz + rob | the after shoot

these cats have been blessed with great weather x2- first for their early february wedding with 60 degrees and sunshine and second for their after session friday afternoon.

liz and rob, thanks for doing everything i asked! you guys rocked out!

i dig after shoots (a.k.a. trash the dress minus the "trashing"). they rock. we started at turtle park and then moved on to the graffiti wall and our top secret north side locations.

UPDATE: thanks, rob, for reminding me about the pimp car! how could i forget to mention that???? as we were driving up our secret, undisclosed street, we saw this shiny, candy apple red pimpness with two equally pimp guys sitting in it. we kept driving toward the gas station. when we passed back by, it was still there. i slowed down and almost stopped in the middle of the road as i tried to get a feel for whether or not liz and rob would be up for stopping. and THEY WERE! i parked the car, got out and walked over. i was almost swallowed up by a pot cloud, but i mentioned that i had a crazy question. i am a wedding photographer...we love your car...can we take a few pictures...you sure can. WOOHOO! the car owner congratulated liz and rob and then the two men just disappeared while we shot a few frames. you'll have to view the slideshow for the results.

live from puerto rico...

we made it to puerto rico! we are now on day three, in rincon at the moment. we're at a really beautiful guesthouse called the blue boy inn, images of here to follow soon.

in the meantime, here's a brief visual tour of our first two days in san juan. the dichotomy here between american and puerto rican culture is fascinating. there is a very high concentration of american chains and even when i have practiced my spanish (i'm rusty, but i did study the language for 8 years), responses are in english.

the colonial architecture in old san juan was incredible. and we will be coming home with an extra 10 or 20 pounds. we are pigging out big time. we'll have to do double time at the gym when we get home.

this is a different way of traveling for us. in the past 10 years, we have been hard core backpackers, always using public transportation and packing as little as possible. this time, we packed a suitcase, have at least an outfit for each day and have rented a car. it's an interesting, though, i must admit, very comfortable, adjustment.

emily + dennis | the "day" after slideshow

you may remember emily and dennis from their beautiful backyard october wedding. well, adam and i had the fantabulous pleasure of photographing their day after session yesterday and it was yummylicious.

sometimes i just get flat out giddy when i stumble upon a photographer's playground of sorts--an urban landscape, it seemed, created just for us! each series of steps visually juicier than the previous.

as always, scroll down through a few favorites and check out the slideshow. emily and dennis, you guys rock! thanks for being up for everything!

what album companies do you use? what is special about them?

at the moment, the only album company with whom we work is pictobooks. a few posts down you'll see another beautiful alternative, but it's just not holding up. i have big concerns about durability after only a few careful views. so, picto it is!

when we started the business we researched far and wide for the most beautiful, stylish, durable, well-crafted album we could find. a trip to las vegas and two days wandering around the wedding and portrait photographers international trade show later, we chose pictobooks. i've continued to research albums and have not yet found a viable competitor.

why should we hire benton park photography co.? what sets you apart?

we hope that our photography speaks for itself. on top of that, hire us because you like us and want to hang out with us and are confident that we always do our research and provide a super stellar (intergalactic even?) client experience. this means the occasional little surprise details of which i won't divulge here.

we try to operate in such a way that you just can't wait to tell everyone you know about us.

what is the timeline for things?

once you decide to commission us, a non-refundable retainer of $1500 is due along with a signed contract. the balance is due two weeks prior to the event. we can take checks or credit cards (an additional 3% fee applies only to cover our cost of the transaction). if you want to pay in installments, as long as we have the full amount two weeks prior, we're happy to work with you on that.

one week before your event, we'll send you a timeline for the day to fill in so we know where to be and when to be there.

day of, we'll photograph to our heart's content for the alloted time.

within three weeks you will have your dvd of edited high resolution files and a link to the online gallery and ordering site.

within five weeks we email your album pre-design in PDF format. we initially choose the images for your album. our approach is that of telling a visual story. with backgrounds in journalism and page design, we pride ourselves on putting pictures together in meaningful ways. if you have any must-include images, we are happy to take suggestions. you have final approval on the album design.

once you approve your album design, it takes 6-8 weeks to produce. we upload our digital design to pictobooks and receive a printed and bound work of art several weeks later.

what is your creative approach?

photojournalism is such a buzz word these days and often misused, so though we are published photojournalists, and that's our background, that is not exclusively our approach. one of our biggest strengths is capturing storytelling emotion. our mizzou journalism backgrounds trained us to look for that. it doesn't mean we don't occasionally direct you or create more fashion based imagery. so, we like to call ourselves wedding and lifestyle artists.

we try to be as unobtrusive and laid back as possible, yet always focused on YOU.

what happens if you fall deathly ill on our wedding day?

unless we are physically not able to be there, we will. if something tragic happens, you will receive a refund and our assistance in finding another photographer. we are well connected to several talented folks in town.

the roma

UPDATE 03.05.08 oh couturebook how i wanted to love you! you are just not a good fit for us. i need you to stay together and stay strong!

the roma from couturebook just arrived this week. it's beautiful. take a look for yourself! (they don't come in cases, btw, so i made the one you see.) this is the roma. it's a very different and special, fine art, kind of book. its pages have a very organic feel and overall, it just exudes handmade loveliness. the cover is a velvety-soft, worn in a good way, leather with a buckle type closure.

faq post | one

now's a great time for us to start digging into some faqs! we'll post these in small, digestible tidbits and permanently link to the final result at the end.

how long have you been photographing weddings?

this is going on our 5th year. we've been in business independently for just over a year. happy anniversary us!

do you travel? what fees are associated?

absolutastically! it's one of our biggest passions. the more exotic the location, the more excited we get. but we're happy to photograph anywhere. fees will vary, but include economy airfare, accommodations, rental car (if necessary) and feeding our bellies!

do you have a business license and insurance?

but of course. the city of st. louis requires a license. and we carry a commercial policy that covers our equipment and liability .

what's in your bag (and do you have backup gear)?

two digital slrs a piece which include:
canon mark IIn
30D
20D
10D

canon's professional L series lenses:
17-40mm F4.0
24mm F 1.4
24-70mm F 2.8
70-200mm F 2.8 Image Stabilizer

a series of prime canon lenses:
50mm F 1.4
85mm F 1.8

4 strobes:
580EX
550EX (2)
430 EX

extras:
2 pocket wizards, light stands and umbrellas
20GB of CF cards
lots of film cameras that we hope to use again one day. :-(

do your wedding stories include a copyright release?

yes. you get the edited and color corrected digital files along with printing rights. you can order prints from us online through our professional lab in minnesota or you can go where you like. just remember quality may not be up to par. we're happy to make suggestions.

we'd like to meet you. how does that work?

great! send us an email or give us a ring to schedule a coffee consultation. i'll bring my smiling face, our pictobooks sample album, a sample handcrafted dvd jewel case, a laptop and a small sign that identifies me. we'll get to know each other with informal conversation in a laid-back environment. most of our city consults take place at the fabulous mississippi mud house on cherokee.

do you offer any discounts?
nope. but we're worth it.

why are albums included with every wedding story?

an album is the best way to present your images in a storytelling format. chances are, if you don't order one right after you get married, you never will. the files will sit and collect dust and that would just be an unfortunate tragedy. in the age of digital intangibles, we believe it's super important to have something beautiful to put your hands on...something classic that becomes your first family heirloom.

ok, that's it for now. a piece of cheesecake awaits me.

liz + rob | the slideshow

yesterday, as the floats were rolling, the beer was pouring and the unmentionables were exposing at mardi gras in soulard, we were busy celebrating the equally fun nuptials of liz and rob- our first 2008 wedding! and what a way to start the year- with lots of irish catholic goodness!

liz and rob, you both looked stunning yesterday and you were a blast to photograph. you were great sports at every turn. we've never been in the middle of a snowball fight on a wedding day before, but liz, you didn't even flinch!

wedding party, you guys also rocked! rebecca and connie, i doubt we will ever see such an award-winning bouquet grab. i smile every time i think of it.

and families, thank you for making our jobs easy by being incredibly friendly, welcoming and easy going.

as always, scroll down through a few favorites to reach the slideshow. press the little arrow on the bottom left of the window to start the show.

good reads

for years now i have been super fascinated by all things afghan. one day we'll go there. in the mean time, i'll read about it. i just picked up kabul beauty school. so far, it's a really good read. a thousand splendid suns and the kite runner, both by khaled hosseini, are also amazing.

and if you weren't already familiar, you can sample yummy afghan dishes here in st. louis at sameem on south grand.

at peace

these were shot in vastly different places, but they all have a similar feeling. it's funny how images made years apart can somehow become part of the same group. a couple are even on slide film. can you guess which ones?

oh how i miss the darkroom sometimes! it pains me to think of future photographers having never experienced the magic of making a print. instant gratification is often fabulous, but digital just can't replace that awe-inspiring moment at which one's very first image suddenly appears in the tray.

kids around the world

to make sure we keep the images flowing, i'll continue to post from past travels for a bit.

adam and i spent six weeks in india last year over the holidays. while there, we worked on a story about city montessori school in lucknow. they have over 30,000 students on more than 20 different campuses around the city. it's quite an amazing educational adventure there. every morning students gathered to sing their school anthem.

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

while in lucknow, i also worked on a project at the jail there. getting access was an incredible feat. i learned a lot about working as a freelance journalist in a foreign country. occasionally the jail brought in outsiders to hold different programs. while i was there, they brought in a group of students to perform for the inmates.

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

on my first trip to india early in 2006 in my corporate past life, i tacked on a few days of personal time at the end of my trip to mumbai to travel to jodhpur. i hired a driver one day and traveled to a beautiful temple town called osiyan.

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

in october of 2005 i spent three weeks in uganda working with an organization called kids in need. KIN helps uganda's 25,000+ street children find stability in their lives.

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

back home. i have spent several years photographing in a north city neighborhood called college hill.

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

before we moved to benton park, we rented in the shaw neighborhood for a year. dee dee was one of our neighbors.

StLouisWeddingPhotographer

while still in grad school, i did a story about a six year old boy with autism. roan thrived despite his disability.

i have said it before, but i'll say it again, WE LOVE TO GET BLOG LOVE. whether or not we already know you, are friends with or related to you, will know you soon or will never know you, we LOVE LOVE LOVE when people leave comments! i've been noticing lots of hits from states across the country and even other countries- the latest visitors are from chile and hungary! so please take a minute, just for our own self amusement, to let us know where you are and to be silly, how the weather is.

1/30/08 UPDATE. add recent visits from lithuania, ukraine, italy, united kingdom and brazil.

i'll start. upstairs in my favorite room of the house- the office. it's bright and sunny and warming up outside. hopefully we will see the same for liz and rob's big day next weekend. cross your fingers!

at the moment i am fantasizing about past travels. our blog has been too word heavy lately, so here are a couple of foreign favorites.

the ratan vilas guesthouse is jodhpur, india, is absolutely lovely. rooms are a steal at $25-$50/night, though expensive by indian standards.

ok, i realize it's a little silly to post about this, but we are now on page 2 on google under "st. louis wedding photographer." it's pretty amazing to watch our site move up on the rankings list almost daily. fun stuff. we were on page 5 only a few weeks ago, so that's pretty quick progress. at the moment, i am addicted to checking web stats. today brought hits from india, hungary and algeria!

why is this a big deal, you ask? :-) well, for example, my photojournalism site is numero uno when one searches for "st. louis photojournalist." i have gotten a handful of phone calls for freelance assignments based on that alone. so, in a nutshell, it's good for business.

i'll throw out a $25 itunes gift card to the first person who contacts us via email to notify us when we're on page 1 of the google search for st. louis wedding photographer!

peace out.

what does our journalism background mean to you?

it means we are trained to visually seek the purest, most honest, emotional moments. we anticipate reactions and capture them when they arise. we find a scene and wait for the right thing to happen that completes the image. the famous and amazing photographer, henri cartier bresson, referred to it as "the decisive moment."

it means we work well under pressure. as a freelance photojournalist, i never knew what assignments would come up each day. restaurant review one moment, portrait of a wwe wrestler in his home the next. adam and i both think on our feet.

we are always professional and incredibly focused on the client experience. details, details, details!

we hold ourselves to extremely high standards.

we are strong editors of our own work. weak editing can be a photographer's biggest downfall.

from an album design perspective, we understand how images work together to tell a story. we keep things clean and simple to highlight the images which speak for themselves. lots of white space and no fading out or overlapping!

video experiment

i LOVE blogging. i have a love/hate relationship with technology. being a photographer in the 21st century, i have to embrace it and mostly that's ok. but sometimes, i get sentimental. i miss my darkroom days. sitting in front of a monitor is just not the same.

i get stoked about things like ipods and iphones, though don't like being tied to my cell phone and feeling the need to be connected all the time.

i'm amazed by the internet in general. and i like to learn new things.

when adam and i bumped into peat wollaeger of kris and peat fame a couple of weeks ago, he whipped out his ipod with a video of his latest art pursuit. he was invited down to miami for art basel.

when youtube conveniently offered to copy the html to my clipboard, i had to hijack the piece for my first video blog post. he is phenomenally talented. what makes it even more entertaining is that peat gets into character when he works. the hair came off to make him look more keith haring-like.

so, this is a bit off topic, but i just had to share.

* the bestest, most supportive husband in the world
* the health of friends, family and ourselves
* parents and now in-laws who have been incredibly supportive of everything we do
* being able to leave cubicle life more than a year ago to pursue my love of the last decade, visual storytelling
* living in a circa 1879 house in a city neighborhood we love
* our slightly spoiled, though ever-so-loyal pooch who we adopted from columbia second chance just before i started graduate school at mizzou nearly 5 years ago
* amazing clients who will no doubt be spreading the buzz about our business
* seeing st. louis finally move toward being a viable and thriving urban scene

ben + laura | urban chic slideshow

hey guys, are you ok with sitting on that dirty windowsill? sure.
hey guys, how about jumping on that mattress? sure.
hey guys, i have an idea. sure.
so went the fabulously urban and gritty engagement shoot with ben and laura. they were up for absolutely anything and i loved it!

st. louis has a lot of great parks, which are excellent for more traditional photography, but in our adventures living in and traveling around the city, we now have a very interesting visual repertoire of stunningly original locations for photo shoots.

if that's what you seek, you're right up our alley (speaking of which, those make some great backdrops, too!).

eco-chic weddings

i just came across the blog of emily anderson, a former event designer for martha stewart living omnimedia that gives tips on beautiful, unique and environmentally friendly wedding items and vendors. it's easy to get lost in her blog with so much useful information. as our business grows, we continue to find ways to operate in the least obtrusive way possible, from using flourescent bulbs throughout our house and recycling everything we can (and encouraging others to do the same!) to making collages out of found objects that would otherwise be thrown away. it's not a bad thing that being green is trendy right now. hopefully it will catch on.

stay tuned for more images. i have a great e-shoot with STLove contest winners, ben and laura, this afternoon. they are up for some fabulously urban, never-seen-before locations, so it should be a blast.

roma + justin | the slideshow | indian wedding st. louis

as promised, here's the slideshow from roma + justin's phenomenal celebration we shot a couple of weeks ago with randy solomon. i have never seen more color (or more guests @ 500!) in an event. it was just incredible- one of those days chockablock with A-HA! photographic moments. adam giggled at me the few times he heard me make a noise when i knew i had something great.

a few favs are below and please scroll down for the slideshow.

WOW

i'm waiting for the go-ahead to get images up here, but WOW is the word that sums up roma and justin's incredible indian wedding. adam and i hoped hoped hoped to make it to an indian wedding while we were in india last winter for six weeks, but it just didn't work out. when i got the call from rock star photographer, randy solomon, asking adam and i to be photographers 2 and 3 (there were 5 of us to cover the event's 500 guests!!!!), we immediately jumped on board.
roma and justin, congratulations! you blew us away in so many ways.
randy and carrie (and dale), you guys were great to work with!
and kudos to christina baker of st. louis wedding consultants and bella's boutique who did an amazing job coordinating and the fabulous staff at the hyatt union station.
i cannot wait to post some pics!

emily + dennis | the slideshow

the details, the emotion, and the heart and soul that went into this wedding made it one incredible day. weddings these days can be a little cookie cutter. since we are not cookie cutter photographers, i especially love when couples really put themselves into their big day- you see it in emily's beautiful dress detailed with black beading and the hilariously wonderful kiss groom's cake and matching life-sized kiss cutout. emily and dennis, you are both amazing and we thank you for choosing us to be a part of such a amazing celebration.

a few favorites and a slideshow are below. show some blog love and leave a comment!!
